Social Determinants of Health Across the Lifespan:  Strategies to Address the Impacts of Poverty

This interactive, half-day Learning Institute is limited to 80 participants and will feature The Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS),* a product of the Missouri Community Action Network, Inc. Ashley Fico of SUNY Brockport will facilitate the CAPS, designed to help participants experience the challenges faced by lower-income families. Breakouts will follow focusing on the impacts of poverty on early childhood, mid-life and older adults, including case examples and successful interventions. The closing session will feature Dr. Julia Hastings, M.S.W., Ph.D.SUNY Albany and Elizabeth “Beth” Smith-Boivin, CEO of theAlzheimer’s Association Northeastern New York Chapter.

Speakers:

Ashley Fico, PhD, MA, SUNY Brockport
Ashley is an Associate Professor, Department of Public Health & Health Education. She is an expert in the role of interpersonal communication, often exploring these skills in the context of health.

Patty Demma, CCAP, Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, Inc.
Patty is a Nationally Certified NEAR (Neuroscience, Epigenetics, ACEs and Resilience) Science Trainer. She runs trainings on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Trauma-Informed care practices, and will lead the breakout on early childhood.

 Becky Preve, Association on Aging in New York 
 Becky is Executive Director, working in collaboration with NY’s local Area Agencies on Aging to promote independence, preserve dignity, and advocate on behalf of aging New Yorkers and their families. Becky will lead the breakout on older adults.

*The Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) – an interactive, immersion experience – is owned by the Missouri Community Action Network. The simulation provides a glimpse into the structural barriers of poverty to transform participants’ perspectives about their own communities. These transformed perspectives inspire action toward positive community change. Registration for the Learning Institute is separate from Conference Registration.

COST FOR LEARNING INSTITUTE:  $95 for Members (NYSPHA & NYSARH)
                       $110 for Non-Members
